What Jesus Meant by Eternal Life in John 17:3: It’s About Knowing Him
Jun 25, 2025
Eternal Life Is to Intimately Know Him
In John 17:3, Jesus defines eternal life in a way that flips many of our assumptions upside down:
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3, NIV)
Eternal life is not just something we receive after we die. It is not merely a future reward for a life well-lived or a final destination for the saved. Jesus said eternal life is knowing God — deeply, intimately, personally. Right now.
This truth is both freeing and sobering. It means we don’t have to wait for heaven to experience eternal life. But it also means we can't fake it. Real eternal life isn't about church attendance, moral behavior, or religious routine. It’s about relationship.
You can spend your whole life around the things of God and never actually know Him. You can sing the songs, serve on a team, even preach sermons — and still hear Him say, “I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23)
So let’s ask the hard question: Do you know about Him — or do you actually know Him?
When’s the last time His voice pierced your heart? When’s the last time you sat with Him just to be near, not to get something?
Because if eternal life is knowing Him… do you have it?
1. What Jesus Really Meant by “Eternal Life” in John 17:3
Eternal Life Is Intimacy, Not a Destination
When Jesus prayed this prayer to the Father, He revealed the heartbeat of the Gospel. He didn’t say, “Eternal life is getting to heaven” or “Eternal life is living forever.” He said eternal life is knowing the Father and the Son.
This is more than head knowledge. The word "know" in Greek is ginosko — a word that implies deep, experiential, relational knowledge. It's the kind of knowing that comes from intimacy, not information.
This changes everything about how we view salvation.
Many have reduced the Gospel to a transaction: say a prayer, believe a set of facts, and you’re in. But Jesus offers transformation, not just a ticket. He calls us to abide in Him (John 15), to walk with Him, to hear His voice, and to live in constant connection with Him.
Imagine being married but never talking to your spouse — never spending time together, never growing closer. That’s not intimacy; that’s just a contract. Too many believers live like they have a contract with God, but no real connection.
So what does this mean for you?
-
Eternal life begins now, not later.
-
Intimacy with Jesus is the goal, not just the byproduct.
-
If you don’t know Him, you’re missing what eternal life really is.
This isn’t about living in fear of your salvation — it’s an invitation to be honest. To leave behind shallow religion and enter into vibrant, daily communion with Jesus.
He is the reward. He is the life. He is eternal life.
2. True Intimacy with Jesus Produces Obedience and Love
Relationship First. Fruit Follows.
You don’t obey to earn God’s love — you love Him and become like Him, and obedience flows. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience is not the way into relationship — it’s the evidence that real relationship exists.
If there’s no fruit, there’s no abiding. That’s not condemnation — it’s clarity. The fruit of intimacy is obedience, joy, transformation, and love. If your life isn’t producing those things, don’t try harder — draw closer.
3. Abiding in Christ: The Only Way to Bear Lasting Fruit
Why Trying Harder Isn’t the Answer
Jesus said, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5). That means no amount of effort, discipline, or willpower can substitute for intimacy. Real change comes from abiding — not striving.
You can’t fake fruit. You either remain in Him, or you don’t. The branch doesn’t bear fruit by effort — it bears fruit by staying connected to the vine.
If your faith feels dry, if your heart feels far — don’t push harder. Press in. Get still. Remain.
Because eternal life isn’t about effort — it’s about Him.

Guided Prayer
Jesus, I want to know You — not just know about You. Teach me to abide in You. Draw me into deeper communion. Strip away religion and awaken intimacy. I choose relationship over routine. I choose You over every substitute.
Holy Spirit, I ask You to show me any area where I’ve been striving instead of abiding. I come out of agreement with performance and pressure, and I come into agreement with the truth that fruit only comes from You. Let love lead to obedience. Let intimacy produce transformation.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Freedom is possible. Intimacy with God is waiting. The Kingdom is calling.
